Blog #8 #BCM112

In this week’s lecture we discovered the depths of ‘Hardware Platforms, Access Permissions and Ideologies of Control’ and focused on the difference between open and closed sourced platforms on the internet.

Open-sourced platforms:

Open-sourced platforms is more external on the media and allows anyone to edit and improve (a big example of this is Wikipedia). It is open for anyone to also share their opinions to the world and have open conversations that literally any random can join in and have with you. Platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter allow for this to happen. This side of the internet is a lot more collaborative and user empowering as people can voice their opinions and feel heard to thousands of people who can then also reply.

Closed- sourced platforms:

Closed sourced platforms is a lot more of an independent business environment that are more exchanges of private information between very few people. This can include platforms such as emails, WhatsApp and Messenger. It is used more for companies who find themselves producing content that is exclusive to the public. Closed sourced platforms ensure they hire exceedingly qualified employees as they rely significantly on the work of their employees. Like copyright, they also work on protecting their company’s creative material which is additionally why they are more privatised with sharing information.
