For my Digital Artefact I wanted to focus on a media niche I am personally involved in and love spending time on. This would be astrology.
In order for my Digital Artefact to successfully exploit itself on the media, I will need to utilise autoethnographic research to expand my expertise on the media niche.
The definition of auto ethnographers is, “…use personal experience to illustrate facets of cultural experience, and, in so doing, make characteristics of a culture familiar for insiders and outsiders” (Ellis et al. 2011).
Ultimately, as a person part of this media niche, I will be writing down my observations and conduct a scientific investigation of my personal experience of part of the niche. I will also be putting myself in other people’s shoes to see how they might interpretate astrology as a media niche.
To do this, I will need to draw from academic and scholarly sources to help analyse my research. As well as popular sources, which is where people write about their own experiences on the niche.
From there, I will need to analyse my data. This involves using background research to help analyse any epiphanies and drawing from any theory, concepts, and ideas to help explain and critique my experience.
After writing my blog post 2, it helped me think more about what approach I want to utilise in order to develop an online persona for my chosen media niche. I am leaning towards using Tik Tok as my field site for this niche. This is because I am very comfortable with this social platform and use it every day. It can allow you to get creative and have some fun in the creation of my digital artefact.
I also get many astrology videos coming up on my FYP, which I can use to draw inspiration and ideas. My Tiktok astrology videos would be purely based on fun themes, or facts about the zodiac signs. I am also quite interested in producing my own podcast. However, I am not very comfortable on how podcasts work.
