For my Digital Artefact I want to utilise this opportunity to create something that will extremely raise awareness and make an impact on society’s viewpoint. In particular, I am very passionate making a change surrounding the severe impact poaching has on our species and the need for people to help make a change in decreasing this problem. Therefore, at the moment my idea involves making a website suitable for teens/adults raising awareness of the impact of poaching. By doing this on a website it is simple media that is widely used by many ages, meaning an increase of audience and hopefully lead to more of society making a positive change.

The atmosphere was booming of enriched excitement, screaming, yelling, shrieking from left right and centre. Voices of 60,000 individuals moulding into one as they sing the same song. United. It was the night of the Bruno Mars concert. I have honesty never experienced an audience beaming with such positive vibes. Where we could all be together in the same huge room and share our excitement. Of course, pre covid times where nowadays an audience is via zoom or facetime or skype etc etc from our separate. However, this audience hits very different to audiences nowadays. Where you could feel within you other people’s energy and share the exhilaration within the room. This personally would have been my favourite audience to have been a part of, also because Bruno Mars is my favourite singer.

Dove is accused of racism within a campaign that promotes body lotion. The brand publishes an advert on their Facebook page displaying a black woman turning into a white woman after applying the body lotion. The ad portrays a black woman removing her top and as her top is removed the woman appears white signifying the after effect of using their body lotion. This sparked major confrontation and outrage in the public within Dove’s followers on social media and elsewhere. Individuals who were a follower of Dove prior to the exposure of this ad began to hashtag like #DonewithDove and claims to refuse buying any more of their products.
The ad was then removed and Dove publicly apologised and stated “Dove is committed to representing the beauty of diversity. In an image we posted this week, we missed the mark in thoughtfully representing women of colour and we deeply regret the offense that it has caused.”
They additionally followed with; “This did not represent the diversity of real beauty which is something Dove is passionate about and is core to our beliefs, and it should not have happened. “We have removed the post and have not published any other related content. We apologise deeply and sincerely for the offence that it has caused.”
Dove had in mind to promote the real beauty of diversity; however, this core idea was interpreted differently as the public perceived the message to be racist. This is identifying how individuals translate pieces of advertisements and messages in different ways and additionally shows the importance of completely assessing an advertisement before exposing it to the public/ media where messages can be understood in numerous of ways. The denotation in Dove’s perspective is to promote the indulgence of using their body lotion, whilst the connotation translated into a promotion that includes racism and degrading diversity. Furthermore, the signifier is the image of the women and the signified is the promotion of supporting racism.

So far for my Digital Artefact I am thinking of creating an instagram account that promotes the need to spread awareness of the effects of poaching. This would target younger individuals who are more likely able to help create a positive impact and change on poaching in the future. It is time to stop ignoring animal poaching and actually make a change and I believe through the use of social media that is frequently used nowadays, it would benefit the need to raise awareness the most.
